Muneeb Faiq (born Srinagar, Kashmir) is a Kashmiri-American neuroscientist.[1][2][3] working on vision restoration and behavior[4] and is known for his work in glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases.[5][6][7][8] He propounded the brain diabetes theory of glaucoma.[9][10][11] Other researchers have found scientific evidence in support of his theory.[12][13] His research also identified the involvement of acetylcholine system in glaucomatous vision loss [14] Muneeb was named National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research, Emerging Vision Scientist-2019,[15][16] USA and was invited to Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. to share his work.[17] According to Expertscape, his expertise ranks in the Top 0.5 percent of 36,544 published authors worldwide on Glaucoma.[18]

Life and career

Muneeb was born in Srinagar, Kashmir where he did his schooling, college, and university. He pursued a junior research fellowship in regenerative medicine and stem cell biology at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Center, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and worked under the mentorship of Panangipalli Venugopal and Balram Bhargava. Following this, he joined a Ph.D. program at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi where he studied the molecular genetics of glaucoma. During his studies on congenital glaucoma, he created a working guide for glaucoma specialist for treating patients and counseling the caretakers.[19][20] In 2014, Muneeb proposed the brain diabetes hypothesis (alternatively called Diabetes type-4) [21][22][23][24][25] – a theory that that explains the cause of vision loss in glaucoma and the involvement of the brain in this disorder.[26] Faiq presented initial findings of this research in the Annual Meeting and Association of Vision and Ophthalmology Research 2019, in Vancouver Canada.[27]

Faiq was awarded the Best PhD Scholar Award at All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi.[28][29] He received this award from Nata Menabde, executive director of the World Health Organisation and is the only Kashmiri to receive this award.[30] Currently, Faiq is working closely with Joel Schuman [31][32] (one of the inventors of the OCT technology) and Bernhard Sabel [33] (Director of the Institute of Medical Psychology, Magdeburg, Germany). Faiq also served as a columnist for Daily News and Analysis [34][35] (DNA) for a short time. He is a regular contributor to Philosophical Investigations[36] and his paper titled “Why is there something rather than nothing” [37] appeared in The Philosopher. The British philosopher Martin Cohen in his book Paradigm Shift describes Muneeb as a contemporary scientist with interesting philosophical insights.[38][39]

Contributions to science

Brain diabetes hypothesis

Glaucoma is an etiologically elusive disorder, its molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Muneeb's research implicates brain insulin resistance as one of the causative factors in glaucoma[40] and hence his group dubbed this condition diabetes type 4.[41][42][43] Muneeb identified central insulin resistance as a reason for glaucomatous vision loss mediated through rise in intraocular pressure, inflammation, and retinal ganglion cell apoptosis.[44] These findings indicate that glaucoma might also have causality based in the central nervous system [45][46] and may have neurodegenerative correlates, making glaucoma similar to other neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Mesentery as a single entity

Faiq was part of the research group that established established that mesentery,[47][48] a part of the human gut, is a single entity.[49][50] He developed a novel method of human cadaveric dissection.[51][52]

Mechanism of Zika Virus mediated Microcephaly

In 2016, Muneeb led a research study discovering a novel mechanism of Zika virus mediated brain defects in neonates.[53][54][55][56] They identified the involvement of retinoic acid signaling in Zika virus mediated microcephaly.[57][58]

Mindfulness based treatment of vision loss

In collaboration with German psychologists, Muneeb led a study establishing the therapeutic effects of meditation-based stress reduction in prevention and treatment of glaucoma.[59][60][61] In their research, they found that intraocular pressure is reduced by meditation and that may reduce further damage to the optic nerve and help to preserve the remaining vision in patients. According to their research, the reduction in stress hormones and inflammation suggests an overall improvement in the patient's quality of life.[62][63][64][65][66] Meditation appears to produce these benefits by reducing the physiological responses to stress.
