English: Hungarian is spoken by as many as 13 million people, principally in the Central European nation of Hungary, as well as in pockets of Eastern Europe, and by diaspora communities worldwide. Hungarian is written using a variation of the Latin alphabet, which has developed since its emergence as a literary language in the 10th century CE. A Uralic language, it is one of the few languages in Europe whose history is unassociated with the Indo-European migration, a massive shift in cultural geography that occurred 6,000 - 12,000 years ago. As such, Hungarian only has some 37 cousins, among them Finnish, Estonian, and Ume Sami.
