Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a research institute specialized in advanced technology innovation, based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.[1][2][3] The institute is a part of the Abu Dhabi Government’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) which functions as the applied research pillar in the domain of Quantum Computing, Autonomous Robotics, Cryptography, Advanced Materials, Digital Security, Directed Energy and Secure Systems.[4][5][6]

Formation and Activities

Technology Innovation Institute was founded in May 2020 and its first Board meeting took place in August 2020.[7][8] The institute has seven different research centers namely:

  • Quantum Research Centre,
  • Autonomous Robotics Research Centre,
  • Cryptography Research Centre,
  • Advanced Materials Research Centre,
  • Digital Security Research Centre,
  • Directed Energy Research Centre,
  • Secure Systems Research Centre.[9][10]

Faisal Al Bannai, the secretary general of The Advanced Technology Research Council remarked that the aim of the research institute is to position UAE as a "global hub for advanced technology research".[7][11][12]

In April 2020, the institute started Citizen Science, an initiative to address the necessity of specialized medical equipment, data analysis and related technical support in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.[13][14] In October 2020, Technology Innovation Institute granted $2.3 million fund to a research group of Purdue University to explore the secure and efficient operations of drones.[15] In December 2020, TII's Cryptography Research Centre has developed The National Crypto Library, with the aim to secure the medical records pertaining to Covid-19 pandemic.[16][17] In the same month, the institute announced collaboration with Virgin Hyperloop to explore and implement "localisation of the futuristic transportation method."[18][19]

In March 2021, it was announced that the first quantum computer will be developed at Technology Innovation Institute's Quantum Research Centre[20] under the supervision of the Chief Researcher Jose Ignacio Latorre and in collaboration with Spanish organization Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech.[21][22][23][24] In the same month, the institute started collaboration with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in form of signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) to augment research activities in the field of Artificial Intelligence.[25][26][27][28]
