United Blood Services (now known as Vitalant) is a non-profit organization that collects blood from volunteer donors and provides blood, blood products and services to nearly 700 hospitals in 22 states across the United States . Founded in 1943 as the Salt River Valley Blood Bank in Phoenix, Arizona, today United Blood Services community blood centers across the country provide blood, blood components and special services for patients in more than 500 hospitals in 18 states, More than 25 million people in communities throughout these states depend on United Blood Services volunteer blood donors.

Organizational history

United Blood Services is part of the Blood Centers Division of Blood Systems. It was founded in 1943 as the Salt River Valley Blood Bank in Phoenix, Arizona by Opal Davis and Kitty Baldwin. United Blood Services was the first interstate blood bank.

Blood Systems, Inc re-branded nationally as Vitalant on September 24, 2018. United Blood Services, as part of that rebrand, is now known as Vitalant.
