English: An early use of the word "fomes" to mean a disease vector (now English "fomites"), in 1546.
fomitē appello, veſtes, ligna & eiuſmodi, quę incorrupta quidē ipſa exiſtentia, conſeruare nihilominus apta ſunt contagionis ſeminaria prima, & per ipſa afficere.

In English:

By "fomes" I mean clothes, wooden objects, and so on, which (though not themselves corrupted) can nevertheless preserve the original germs of the contagion, and infect by means of these.
