Description

Slate in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.

This is an outcrop of slate, a foliated metamorphic rock composed of clay minerals. Slate is the product of low-grade metamorphism of shale. The original shale bedding is visible in slate samples at this locality. The planar surfaces facing the viewer in the above photo are foliation planes.

Stratigraphy: Knife Lake Formation, metamorphism at 2.7 Ga (Neoarchean)

Locality: roadcut on the southern side of Rt. 135 at the Gilbert city limits sign, just west of the town of Gilbert & southeast of the town of Virginia, central St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA (47° 29' 33.57" North latitude, 92° 29' 24.79" West longitude)
