DescriptionŞanlıurfa Gümrük Hanı 3970.jpg
English: One of pictures taken over some 20 years. Some arfe scans from slides, most digital. A notice at the door states that the Şanlıurfa Gümrük Hanı or Customs Inn was constructed during the reign of sultan Suleiman the Magnificent by the governor Behram Pasha in 1566 (the year the sultan died) as a caravansary. Elsewhere, and I think correctly, one can read that it was built by Hacı Ömer Efendi between 1873 and 1878. The rooms on the ground floor of the inn, which was built as the "Passenger Inn", were built for storage and barns, while the rooms on the upper floor were built for the passengers to stay. It is a very lively place and attached to the bedesten and markets area. A stream courses through it, the courtyard is a teagarden, with some small trade around. On the first floors there are small industries. In many such hans one sees the tourist shops take over, I last went here in 2019 and there was still a lot of sewing going on.
