== Early life ==
Belford was born on May 18, 1932 in Washington, D.C.<ref name=":1" /> She attended the [[Organization:University of Pennsylvania|University of Pennsylvania]] and received her bachelor's degree in [[Mathematics]]. She then attended the University of Illinois and graduated in 1960 with a PhD in mathematics PhD.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Communications |first=Grainger Engineering Office of Marketing and |title=Geneva Belford, 1932-2014 |url=https://cs.illinois.edu/news/geneva-belford-1932-2014 |access-date=2023-10-13 |website=cs.illinois.edu |language=en}}</ref> Her research originally focused on chemistry and mathematics. == Career ==
After graduating with her PhD, Belford was hired as a research associate at the University of Illinois Chemistry Department. She continued working there until she was became an assistant professor of Mathematics in 1964.<ref name=":0" /> Belford later became a research assistant professor with the Center for Advanced Computation in 1972. In 1976, she was promoted to a research associate professor and in 1977, she joined the Department of Computer Science.
