Let <math>c \in \mathbb{R}</math> and <math>f(x) = c</math>. By the definition of the derivative,

This shows that the derivative of any constant function is 0. 

====Intuitive (geometric) explanation====
The [[Derivative|derivative]] of the function at a point is the slope of the line [[Tangent|tangent]] to the curve at the point. [[Slope]] of the constant function is zero, because the [[Tangent|tangent line]] to the constant function is horizontal and it's angle is zero.

In other words, the value of the constant function, y, will not change as the value of x increases or decreases.

For any functions <math>f</math> and <math>g</math> and any real numbers <math>a</math> and <math>b</math>, the derivative of the function <math>h(x) = af(x) + bg(x)</math> with respect to <math>x</math> is: <math> h'(x) = a f'(x) + b g'(x).</math>

In [[Leibniz's notation]] this is written as:

The derivative of the function <math>h(x) = f(g(x))</math> is

In Leibniz's notation, this is written as:

Focusing on the notion of maps, and the differential being a map <math>\text{D}</math>, this is written in a more concise way as:

===The inverse function rule===

If the function {{Mvar|f}} has an [[Inverse function|inverse function]] {{Mvar|g}}, meaning that <math>g(f(x)) = x</math> and <math>f(g(y)) = y,</math> then

In Leibniz notation, this is written as

==Power laws, polynomials, quotients, and reciprocals==

If <math>f(x) = x^r</math>, for any real number <math>r \neq 0,</math> then 
:<math>f'(x) = rx^{r-1}.</math>

When <math>r = 1,</math> this becomes the special case that if <math>f(x) = x,</math> then <math>f'(x) = 1.</math>

Combining the power rule with the sum and constant multiple rules permits the computation of the derivative of any polynomial.

===The reciprocal rule===

The derivative of <math>h(x)=\frac{1}{f(x)}</math>for any (nonvanishing) function ''{{Mvar|f}}'' is:

The reciprocal rule can be derived either from the quotient rule, or from the combination of power rule and chain rule.

* The reciprocal rule may be derived as the special case where <math display="inline">g(x)=-1\!</math>.

== Derivatives of exponential and logarithmic functions ==

===Logarithmic derivatives===

The [[Logarithmic derivative|logarithmic derivative]] is another way of stating the rule for differentiating the [[Logarithm|logarithm]] of a function (using the chain rule):

[[Logarithmic differentiation]] is a technique which uses logarithms and its differentiation rules to simplify certain expressions before actually applying the derivative.{{citation needed|date=October 2021}}

Logarithms can be used to remove exponents, convert products into sums, and convert division into subtraction — each of which may lead to a simplified expression for taking derivatives.

The derivatives in the table above are for when the range of the inverse secant is <math>[0,\pi]\!</math> and when the range of the inverse cosecant is <math>\left[-\frac{\pi}{2},\frac{\pi}{2}\right]\!</math>.

It is common to additionally define an inverse tangent function with two arguments, <math>\arctan(y,x)\!</math>.  Its value lies in the range <math>[-\pi,\pi]\!</math> and reflects the quadrant of the point <math>(x,y)\!</math>.  For the first and fourth quadrant (i.e. <math>x > 0\!</math>) one has <math>\arctan(y, x>0) = \arctan(y/x)\!</math>.  Its partial derivatives are
