In [[Computing|computing]], a '''virtualization engine''' is the concept of giving a holistic view of all the resources in the entire [[Computer network|network]] infrastructure. The holistic view is independent of the physical data storage devices and their geographic location.

A good example of virtualization is [[Company:IBM|IBM]]'s virtualization engine which offers a common way to address component level devices.

Virtualization engines have existed in the [[Mainframe computer|mainframe]] environment for years, but the concept is only now catching up in heterogeneous corporate computer networks.

Current virtualization engines are in sharp contrast to the  [[Storage virtualization|partitioning based virtualization]] that is limited in its scope and only offers a logical view of data storage partitions.
