Biology:List of Portuguese grape varieties
Portugal possesses a large array of native grape varieties, producing a wide array of different Portuguese wines. The absence of widespread usage of international varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, is a unique hallmark of Portuguese wines. Under the Portuguese appellation system of Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC), each Portuguese wine region has certain castas or grape varieties that are authorized for wine production in that region. Wines produced from grapes outside of the authorized list are not permitted to use a DOC on the wine label but instead must be sold as simple table wine under the Vinho Regional (VR) designation.[1]

- ↑ Ahmed, Red grapes[145].
- ↑ Although this variety is listed by Ahmed as being in use in the Douro region (White grapes[146]), information about its identity is difficult to find. However its name emerged in the following statement under the heading "Autochthonous grape varieties":
"The list of Portuguese varieties contains some quite exotic names, namely Esgana Cão (Dog Strangler), Amor-não-me-deixes (Don't Leave Me Alone, My Love), Carrega Burros (Donkey Loader), Pe Comprido (Long Leg) and others." In the section "White Grape Varieties", Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, I.P. has no reference to Dona Blanca in the alphabetical listing[184] nor under the heading Síria[185]."Dona Blanca is an obscure white grape variety used in the production of White Port and, less frequently, dry table wines. It finds its home on the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in the vineyards of northern Portugal and Galicia in Spain." (see Kavanagh, Tom, et al. "Dona Blanca."
