If the axes of a three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system are rotated such that the x axis points toward the observer and the y axis points down, then the coordinate system is right-handed if the z axis points toward the right and left-handed if it points to the left. Any other three-dimensional orthogonal coordinate system can then be defined to be right- or left-handed depending on the determinant of the matrix A (relating it to the right-handed Cartesian system) being +1 or -1.
