Notenik is a free and open-source desktop note-taking application written in Swift for macOS. The application uses the Markdown syntax and stores all of its notes in plain-text files. Wikilinks can be used to link from one note to another.[1]

One of the primary distinguishing features of Notenik is its ability to store a variety of field-value pairs with each note, making use of a number of distinct field types, each with its own associated functionality. Each folder of notes can have its own set of fields available for editing within the application. Multiple sort options are available, making use of several of the most common and useful field types.

Notenik is also known for its powerful features, an abundance of import and export options, its many customization options and its friendly native Mac user interface.[2]

History

The first version of Notenik, written in Java, and using Swing as its GUI widget toolkit, was originally released in 2009.[3] A second version, also written in Java, but using JavaFX instead of Swing, was first released in 2017.[4]

Work was started on on the current version, written in Swift, at the beginning of 2019.[5] Version 1.1.0 was released on 5 July 2019. [6]

A custom Markdown parser was added in version 3.2.0, released on 22 March 2020, in order to enable wikilinks between Notes.[7]

Reception

Notenik has been described as "the best open source free app for Atomic Notes and Permanent Notes," and compared favorably to other software designed to record and manage digital notes.[8] Notenik has been welcomed as a new and powerful tool within the Zettelkasten community,[9] and is regarded as one of a handful of tools suitable for use in creating and maintaining a simple, portable, Zettelkasten with content stored in plain-text files employing Markdown formatting.[10]

Notenik is notable for its powerful abilities to generate webpages and websites, making it something of a static site generator.[11]

Notenik has also been recognized as a worthy entry into the field of Personal knowledge base software.[12]

Notenik has been recognized as a significant Indie app within the Macintosh community.[13]

Reviewers have noted that considerable functionality is included in Notenik, and that new features are added regularly.[14]

Notenik currently has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 on the Mac App Store, where reviewers have described it as "a hidden powerhouse," "clean, uncluttered, easy to use" and "a fantastic app."[15]
