Tire Discounters is a tire and auto service shop started by Chip Wood in 1976 in Plainville, Ohio, with a single bay store and a truck load of tires from Akron. They are known for their quirky radio spots from the early 2000s with the "Phantom Tire Buyer", their slogans, "Home of the Free Alignment" and "Out the Door with More", and the ever-changing signs at their stores. They are one of few tire stores that used nitrogen inflation, introduced to Tire Discounters in 2004. In 2014, they broke the Guinness World Record for the tallest stack of tires. [1]

History

Tire Discounters is Ohio-based, headquartered in Cincinnati. They are family-owned and operated by the Wood family. In 2008 they entered the Lexington market. In 2011, they opened a new headquarters in Sharonville. It is now their 200,000 square feet warehouse. In the same year, they entered the Louisville market, and in 2014, Nashville. In 2015, they moved their headquarters to downtown Cincinnati, while maintaining warehouses in Sharonville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In 2016, they opened their 100th store and entered the Chattanooga market. (As of February 2017) they have over 100 stores across Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Georgia, with locations in Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Lexington, Louisville, Nashville, and Chattanooga and employ more than 1,100 people.[2][3][4]

Tire Discounters signs

Chip Wood wrote the original signs for years. Now, a group of people write the signs at the Cincinnati office and send them to the stores twice a week. They have been shared on Buzzfeed, Reddit and more.[5][6]

Phantom Tire Buyer

The identity of the Phantom Tire Buyer remains unknown. However, it is rumored to be Chip Wood himself. In an article in the Cincinnati Business Courier, Jamie Ward, the current company president, laughed off the question.[7]

Tallest tire stack

Record-breaking 2014 tire stack

In celebration of the reopening of its first store, Tire Discounters built a stack of Falken Tires on March 27, 2014, that was 19.95 feet tall. The previous tire stacking world record of 19.77 was set on September 6, 2009, in Wiesental, Germany.[8][9]
