Bitcointalk is a controversial Internet forum dedicated to the discussion of bitcoin, blockchain technology and cryptocurrency.
History
Bitcointalk registered in August 2011 by Martti Malmi. The forum is currently owned by an user called "theymos".[1]
The commonly used cryptocurrency-trader meme "HODL" originated from a 2013 Bitcointalk forum post.[2]
Scams
A 2016 study by researchers from the University of New Mexico, and University of Tulsa, Oklahoma identified 1780 scams, based on forum reports.[3] There is a demand for more privileges for older user accounts. Traded accounts were reportedly used to scam people.
Relation to the r/bitcoin subreddit
The same person "theymos" who runs Bitcointalk, owns r/bitcoin on reddit which heavily criticized for censorship and personal attacks.[4]
