On the 2023 memorial day weekend, at least 53 people were shot and 11 killed in the wave of shootings in Chicago, Illinois. The ages of the victims range from 2 to 77 years old.[2] The surge in gun violence was recorded during this holiday weekend and reported as one of the most violent Memorial Day weekends since 2015 along with the 2022 memorial day shooting – both were overshadowed by tragic incidents.[3][4][5][1][6]

Historical trend

Generally, holiday weekends tend to be deadlier than regular weekends.[7] The Memorial Day weekend in Chicago was overshadowed by a tragic wave of shootings.[4] The holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and has also historically marked the beginning of the seasonal uptick in gun violence.[8] The trend over the previous few years shows that crime numbers are significantly rising during Memorial Day Weekend.[9][10] The 2023 shooting was described as bloody which ended near the city's Memorial Day record[11] and was one of the highest along with 2022 since the 2016 holiday weekend with 71 shootings.[3] In 2022, police recorded 50 shootings and nine fatalities. In 2021 3 people were killed out of 37 shootings during the same public holiday.[10] Bloomberg reported that overall crime incidents in Chicago jumped in 2022 by 41% from 2021, and are up another 42% in 2023 through May 28.[12]

Shooting and victims

The shooting started on Friday, May 26 when a suspect used a handgun to fire following an altercation. Later that day a total of 3 people were shot in various neighborhoods.[7][3] Self-inflicted shots were also reported. A 2-year-old girl was injured after she accidentally shot herself.[13] Another 2-year-old boy was also injured while playing in a bedroom with a male adult when a handgun went off.[2] A 69-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Hospital after being found near one of the crime scenes. The shootings occurred in the streets, sidewalks, residential homes, a hotel room, at the Ford City mall, inside vehicles, near residential buildings, in yards, and while standing in the alley. Multiple offenders fired shots from vehicles, streets, residential homes, and other public locations. Most suspects were not identified but some already interacted with the victims- some of them were involved in fights.[2] Of the four-day consecutive shootings, Saturday, May 27 had the most incidents, with 25 victims; Sunday had 19; and Monday, 12. 3 people were shot on Friday evening.[3]

Response and measures

The mayor of Chicago released a statement condemning the deadly violence.[14] He also expressed commitment to leveraging resources for future protective measures,[15] and work to address the root cause of the crime as a priority in collaboration with partners including the police department. The interim Police Superintendent described the violence as a manifestation of community disinvestment, poverty, and trauma that the city has struggled for too long while acknowledging the lives lost to gun violence. Despite the devastating end of the Memorial Day weekend, the dedication of thousands of police officers, and other groups was recognized. The Public Safety Committee Chair said the police worked overtime during the holiday and successfully covered the beach- especially after gunfire rang out on North Avenue Beach on Friday. The city hired residents as peacekeepers and launched a crisis unit with controversies if such new programs show impact soon enough.[16][10]

Aftermath

Hundreds marched against violence in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.[3]
