Ventusky is a meteorological platform for data visualization operated by the Czech company InMeteo.
Name
The name Ventusky is a combination of the Latin word Ventus (meaning "wind"), and the word "sky".[1]
History and description
Ventusky is operated by the Czech company InMeteo.[1] The platform was launched as a website in 2016.[2] In the following years, native mobile applications were also released on Android and iOS.[3]
The platform focuses on displaying detailed meteorological data and their visualization. It offers data from both global and regional models. The main provider of meteorological data for Ventusky is Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).[4] However, the radar and satellite layers have several other country-specific sources. Through these models, users can monitor the development of precipitation, temperature, wind, waves and many other meteorological variables for several days in high resolution.[5] Ventusky is used especially for hurricane tracking.[6] Ten million people around the world use the service every month.[7]
In 2022, the Ventusky project began to use its own algorithm for detecting cyclone and anticyclone centres from mean sea level pressure layer.[8]
