Butlr Technologies is an American technology company based in San Francisco, CA, and Boston, MA.[1] It was founded by Honghao Deng and Jiani Zeng and launched as a spinout of the MIT Media Lab in 2019. Honghao Deng, a computational designer who is the company's CEO, and co-founder and CPO Jiani Zeng created a wireless sensor that uses body heat to track location data and body posture.[2]

History

Butlr spun out of the MIT Media Lab in 2019, with offices in Silicon Valley and Boston. Butlr was founded by 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs Honghao Deng and Jiani Zeng with a mission to make the built environment people-aware.[3][4][5]

The technology company raised $1.2 million in 2020 in its first seed funding round to help combat the ongoing pandemic. The thermal sensors could help manage store queues and maximum occupancy.[3] In July 2021, a new seed funding round raised $7.9 million to help the development of the software.[6] In July 2022, the company raised $20 million in a Series A funding round, and in November 2022, it announced a partnership with real estate technology and data company Propstack for occupancy sensing across commercial real estate projects in India and a partnership with smart building technologies company View.[7][8][9] The company has raised a total of $29.1 million to date.

The World Economic Forum named Butlr as one of the Technology Pioneers of 2022.[10]
