"Washed Ashore" is a project of the Artula Institute for Art and Environmental Education,a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Bandon, Oregon, known for its unique approach to marine conservation through art. Founded on the principle of turning ocean pollution into powerful messages, Washed Ashore engages local and area volunteers in creative workshops held at facilities in both Bandon and Coos Bay.

Overview

The project focuses on transforming marine debris, particularly plastic waste washed ashore, into captivating pieces of art. The workshops involve the assembly of "piece work," a process that includes drilling holes through plastic and skillfully stitching it to wire mesh. These individual panels are later intricately fastened by the artistic team to welded structures, creating thought-provoking exhibits that highlight the environmental impact of plastic pollution.

Traveling Exhibits

Washed Ashore's captivating artistic sculptures, created from upcycled marine debris, have been exhibited at numerous prominent locations, captivating audiences with their powerful environmental message. The organization's Traveling Exhibits have graced diverse venues, ranging from renowned museums and galleries to public spaces, educational institutions, and environmental events. These impactful displays have been featured across the United States, drawing attention to the urgent need for marine conservation and the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on our oceans. Washed Ashore's commitment to raising awareness through art has resonated with audiences of all ages, fostering a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges our planet faces and inspiring positive change.

Leadership

As of July 2021, Washed Ashore is led by Executive Director Katie Dougherty. Under her leadership, the organization continues to thrive, expanding its reach and impact in the realm of environmental conservation through art. Angela Haseltine Pozzi, the founder and creative director mentioned in previous versions, is no longer associated with Washed Ashore.

Community Involvement

Washed Ashore actively involves the community in its mission, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among local and area volunteers. The collaborative effort of these dedicated individuals contributes to the creation of impactful art installations that serve as a reminder of the pressing need for sustainable practices and plastic waste reduction.
