The Lophiostomataceae are a family of fungi in the order Pleosporales. Taxa have a widespread distribution, especially in temperate regions, and are saprobic or necrotrophic on herbaceous and woody stems.[1]

The family Lophiostomataceae was thought to be heterogeneous or paraphyletic, but recent phylogenetic analyses support the monophyletic status of Lophiostomataceae sensu stricto (Mugambi and Huhndorf 2009;[2] Zhang et al. 2012;[3] Hyde et al. 2013;[4] Wijayawardene et al. 2014,[5]). In their multi-gene analysis, Schoch et al. (2006,[6] 2009,[7]) showed Lophiostomataceae to belong in Pleosporales.[8]

Zhang et al. (2009),[9] showed that Lophiostoma, Lophiotrema and Massarina formed well-supported subclades in Pleosporales.[8]
