Left Angle Autograph is a motion graphics, VFX (visual effects) / compositing software application developed by Left Angle for video production, filmmaking post-production, video game production, and television production.

It is supported on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

There are two versions of Autograph:

  • Autograph Studio: intended for professional studios
  • Autograph Creator: intended for freelance motion designers and VFX artists

Functions and Features

Autograph functions include animation, 2D & 3D compositing, keying, tracking, template making, responsive design video production, audio mixing, non-linear editing, and media transcoding[3][4].

Third-party integrations

Autograph functions can be extended through a variety of third-party integrations, such as OpenFX plug-ins, Python scripts, Shadertoy shaders, and Javascript expressions.

Python Scripts

Autograph Python Scripts can be used to automate repetitive tasks, simplify complex features, and perform complex calculations. They can also be used to extend the user interface with custom PySide panels and QML scripts[5].

Development

Autograph was created by software developer Alexandre Gauthier-Foichat and longtime professional 3D computer graphics designer François Grassard at Left Angle[6].

Prior to developing Autograph, Alexandre Gauthier-Foichat was the the original author and lead developer behind open-source digital compositing software, Natron. Alexandre led Natron development until financial support for development ceased in 2017[7][6][8]. François was an active Natron user and collaborated with Alexandre to later create Autograph, which was released on January 18th, 2023[9][10].

Reception

Autograph has been referred to as an alternative to After Effects[11][9][12][10][13].

Similar products

While not dedicated to compositing, the open source software Blender contains a limited node-based compositing feature which, among other things is capable of basic keying and blurring effects.[14]
