Engineering:Hyperautomation
Hyperautomation is the combination of technologies that allow faster application authorship (like low-code and no-code) with automation technologies that coordinate different worker types (i.e. human and artificial) for intelligent and strategic workflow optimization.[1][2] It came to exist as a combination of trends in process automation technologies like RPA, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning (ML), NLP, and Process Mining.[1][3][4][5] It allows employees to work with technology, with intelligent hyperautomation taking care of tasks too complicated for traditional automation methods.[2]
Gartner has been credited with coining the term[6][7] and noted that the trend was kicked off with robotic process automation (RPA). Gartner's report notes that, “RPA alone is not hyperautomation. Hyperautomation requires a combination of tools to help support replicating pieces of where the human is involved in a task."[8][9] It can be understood as the practical augmentation, not replacement, of the speed and accuracy of human work with technology, in pursuit of a 10x-100x improvement to drives change and creates new business models.[1][10] While regular automation improves processes, hyperautomation adds artificial intelligence and machine learning to automation, increasing the use-case potential.[11][12][13]
The technology can be used in various industries, including banking & insurance, retail, customer service, healthcare, and government.[14][6] As an example, the eligibility verification process of the Affordable Care Act uses hyperautomation to complete as many as 300,000 processes per month.[14] Rolls-Royce uses hyperautomation in its civil aerospace business, while Ford plans to use the technology to improve all business process management dashboards.[2]
During the coronavirus pandemic, hyperautomation was frequently discussed as a way to help businesses transition to remote work.[1][6][12] In May 2020, UiPath Inc., announced the availability of its end-to-end hyperautomation platform as the core of its 20.4 release box set.[11] The technology was also listed as one of the top technology trends of 2020.[15][16][2]
