Biography:Sharfuddin Abu Tawwama

Sharfuddin Abu Tawwama was an Islamic scholar and preacher. He is a Sufi saint.[1][2]

Early life

Tawwama was born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. He was educated in Islamic theology and natural sciences in the Greater Khorasan region. In 1260, he moved to Delhi where he taught for 10 years.[3]

Career

In 1270, Tawwama moved in Sonargaon city in Bengal with his family at the request of Ghiyas ud din Balban, Sultan of Delhi. He established a seminary and madrassah in Sonargaon. It became a notable center of Islamic education. The noted scholar Makhdoom Sharfuddin Ahmed Yahya Maneri studied here for 10 years under Tawwama. He wrote a book on Islamic mysticism called Maqamat. He wrote a book called Nam-i-Haq, in Farsi language, on Islamic Jurisprudence.[3][4]

Death

Tawwama died in 1300. He is buried in a darga complex in Mograpara in Sonargaon Upazila.[3][5] The madrassah no longer exists and its ruins have not been found.[6]
