Huygens-designed mechanical watch with spiral hairspring. It is often considered as the earliest known type of high-precision watch. The application of the spiral hairspring (balance spring) for watches ushered in a new era of accuracy for portable timekeepers, similar to that which the pendulum had introduced for (mechanical) clocks.
