Cuseum is an American startup company that develops products such as mobile applications, digital membership cards, and an augmented reality platform for museums, public attractions, and cultural nonprofits.[1]

History

The founder, Brendan Ciecko, started Cuseum in 2014 as a part of PayPal Start Tank in Boston, MA.[citation needed] Prior to that he founded Ten Minute Media, a creative marketing agency focused on the music industry, for which he was named Cool, Determined & Under 30 by the Inc. Magazine.[2]

In 2015, Cuseum joined the startup accelerator program Techstars.[3]

The company's research and development includes new approaches to location- and context-aware content delivery. In 2017, the company was granted two patents for new technologies,[4][5] both of which enable organizations to engage with visitors based on their indoor and outdoor location and behavior.

Funding

Cuseum received $1.4 million from investors in the seed round.[1] The company raised funding from Techstars, Paul English, Wayne Chang, Joshua Schachter,[6] and other investors.

Special projects

In June 2018, Cuseum released a mobile app for the White House Historical Association in partnership with Amazon Web Services.[7]

The company has contributed to AR in the museum sector. It worked in partnership with the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna to create an AR rendition of The Tree of Life by Gustav Klimt, which was released at the Vienna’s Pioneers Festival in 2018, using company's augmented reality platform.[8]

The startup has also produced a project called "Hacking the Heist"[9] which uses augmented reality to return stolen artwork to its frames at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The theft of these paintings remains the largest art heist in history,[10] and the app allows users to hold up a phone or a tablet and view the paintings back on the walls.[11] The project has received wide acclaim in over 100 publications internationally.

Contributions

Augmented reality

Cuseum's research, prototypes, and work in the field have been shared by PwC,[12] Cisco, HubSpot,[13] PTC, and CB Insights, and presented at Augmented World Expo, among other industry conferences.

The company heavily utilizes the Apple ARKit, which allows development of mobile applications with high-precision AR layers. Cuseum implemented their first project using AR in the museum sector in partnership with Perez Art Museum Miami.[14]
