Company history

Twipe was founded in 2011 by Danny Lein and is based in Leuven, Belgium.[1] Twipe is active in Belgium, Estonia, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Denmark, Finland, the UK and the USA.[2]

Twipe's first clients were in Belgium, including the daily newspaper De Standaard, which was named 'App of the Year' by The Mobile Revolution for its newspaper app.[3] De Standaard also launched a digital-only evening edition with Twipe.[4] In 2014, Twipe's NextGen publishing platform that was used for the creation of "De Media App", a publication looking at the Flemish media sector.[5][6]

Products

Replica publishing enables media houses to automatically generate interactive versions of their newspapers, available on mobile or tablet, through responsive web applications, as well as native iOS or Android applications.[7]

NextGen publishing creates mobile-optimised version of newspapers through partially or fully automated templates, which can integrate additional content such as games and videos.[8] NextGen can also be used to make standalone digital-only newspaper editions like L'Édition du Soir at Ouest-France.

EngageReaders is an analytics tool that uses a predictive model developed with KU Leuven and imec to give newsrooms insight on their newspaper's performance, translating it into actionable analytics.[9] In 2018, it was awarded the top prize from the Big Data & Al for Media Association, for Excellence in the Use of Predictive Analytics.[10]

JAMES, Your Digital Butler is an AI solution that sends personalised recommendations to newspaper readers. The recommendations are based on a hybrid algorithm combining trending news with personalised news to ensure that news readers do not find themselves trapped in filter bubbles. JAMES is currently leveraged by newspapers across the Northern Hemisphere and is most commonly integrated into newsletters and recommended sections and news homepages.[citation needed]

Magazine.live allows individuals and corporate publishers to create their own digital magazines, newsletters, and event guides.[11]

Innovation

Reader attached to sensors for digital reader engagement research.

In 2016, Google announced part of its Digital News Fund would be allocated to the EngageReaders project submitted by Twipe and Mediahuis.[12] EngageReaders was one of the 128 winners chosen in that funding round.[13] This joint project aimed to improve the daily production process of newspapers through the integration of scientifically-researched engagement insights.[14] The research for this project was conducted in partnership with Mediahuis, imec, and two research groups at the KU Leuven in 2015.[15] As part of the project, a panel of 60 people were watched while reading digital editions, and had their pulse, skin conductance, body temperature, and eye movements tracked, which allowed for a predictive model to be built.[16] The study found that a strong reaction in the body is provoked when reading a digital edition.[17]

JAMES - Your Digital Butler

In 2017, Twipe again was one of the winners of the innovation fund from Google DNI, with the selection of their joint project with The Times and The Sunday Times called 'JAMES - Your Digital Butler'.[18] Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism called this project "a development to watch" in 2018.[19] A March 2018 article in Digiday announced that a team of 9 people would be dedicated to the development of JAMES, combining a group from News UK's data science team along with Twipe's own development team.[20]

On May 23, 2019, The Times and The Sunday Times, along with their partner Twipe, introduced the key results of the JAMES project. The event took place at the News UK Building in London. As Charlotte Tobbit of Press Gazette explains, JAMES creates individualised emails by predicting content that subscribers are likely to be interested in, then sending it in their preferred format at the time they are most likely to read it.[21] 117,000 subscribers of The Times and Sunday Times were part of the various experiments and 70 per cent of them interacted with James by either opening or clicking on the newsletter. The number of subscription cancellations, or churn, fell by 49 per cent among these subscribers compared with a control group which was not exposed to the James AI. This was particularly efficient with low- or medium-engagement subscribers.

As Danny Lein, CEO of Twipe interviewed by Journalism.co.uk, added: “the key interest of JAMES is habit-building in readers, with AI providing a trigger for the audience to pick up the digital paper".[22]

International presence

In 2013, Twipe signed their first French customer, Ouest-France and created the first purely digital French newspaper, L’édition du Soir.[23] In 2015, Twipe strengthened its leadership position in the French market with the launch of Le Télégramme's apps.[24] Le Parisien relaunched their apps in 2016 with Twipe's replica publishing solution.[25] 2017 saw the launch of a new breed of app from Twipe, with Centre France's app using the new Web App Touch technology.[26]

Twipe has also been active in the Dutch market, starting in 2014 with Holland Media Combinatie, one of the largest publishers of regional newspapers in the Netherlands.[27]

In 2017, Twipe signed their first big partnership in Germany with the launch of new ePaper apps for DuMont's seven regional newspapers.[28]

In 2017, it was announced that Agfa Graphics was migrating its mobile publishing activities to Twipe.[29] With this migration of Agfa Graphics clients to the Twipe platform, Twipe strengthened its position in the German, Swiss, and Austrian newspaper and magazine markets.[30] The migration doubled Twipe's customer base in German-language markets.[31]

In 2021, Twipe branched into the Nordic market with Børsen and Keskisuomalainen and also the US Market with Advance Local.[32]

As recognition for Twipe's impressive international presence, the company was awarded the 2022 Lion of the Export award from Flanders Investment and Trade for companies with up to 49 people. Twipe generates 92% of its revenue internationally.
