The American Vegetarian Association (AVA) is a group based in East Hanover, New Jersey which promotes vegetarianism.[1] It was founded in 1999.[2] AVA provides certification of food products as vegetarian/vegan which enables vegetarian-minded people to make accurate food choices.

Predecessor

An earlier body with the same name, the American Vegetarian Association, also known as the American Vegetarian Society, was founded in 1850 by William Metcalfe, William Alcott, Russell Trall and Sylvester Graham in New York City, modeled on a similar organization, the Vegetarian Society, established in Great Britain in 1847.[3][4]

A meeting was reported by the Hartford Courant in 1853.[5]

Another annual convention was reported on by The New York Times in 1856.[6]

The last recorded meeting of the original AVA dates from September 25, 1861 in New York.[7]
