Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) is an International organization devoted to helping women control when and how they have children. FP2020 works with governments, civil society, multilateral organization, donors, the private sector and the research and development community to enable 120 million additional women and girls to use Contraceptives by 2020. FP2020 is an outcome of the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning and is based on the principle that all women, no matter where they live, should have access to lifesaving contraceptives.[1][2][3][4]

Impacts

FP2020 global partnership, launched in London in 2012, has help about 320 million women and girls to use some form of modern contraception in the 69 focus countries, up from 260 million in 2012.[5][6][7][8]

Nigeria

Nigeria was part of the first group of countries to commit to the FP2020 partnership when it launched in 2012. As a result of modern contraceptive use in Nigeria, more than 1.9 million unintended pregnancies were prevented, and 705,000 unsafe abortions and 13,000 maternal deaths averted in the last year.[9][10][11]

India

As a result of contraceptive use in India, more than 54.5 million unintended pregnancies were prevented, and 1.8 million unsafe abortions and 23,000 maternal deaths averted in the last year alone. In 2017, Family planning in India updated its FP2020 commitment with two very specific, data-driven pledges: to invest $3 billion of domestic resources in family planning by 2020, and to increase the country's modern contraceptive prevalence for married women from 53.1 per cent to 54.3 per cent by 2020, with 74 per cent of the demand for modern contraceptives satisfied. Both of those commitments have been fulfilled. Over 139 million women and girls in India now use modern methods of contraception.[12]

Bangladesh Bangladesh also joined the global platform and made its commitment that includes reducing total fertility rate from 2.3 to 2.0 by 2021 and increase contraceptives prevalence rates from 62 percent to 80 percent by 2021. The government in 2015 also pledged to reduce the unmet need for family planning from 12 percent to 7 percent by 2021.[13]

Kenya An increase of 66 per cent of contraceptive use in Kenya has helped avert more than 2 million unintended pregnancies, 503,000 unsafe abortions, and 5,700 maternal deaths last year alone. In 2018, the use of modern contraceptives for all women rose by 61 per cent.[14]

Burkina Faso the government had increased spending by 30% and attracted more donations to reduce pregnancies.[15]

Beth Schlachter

Schlachter is the Executive Director of FP2020. She has provided strategic leadership and oversight of FP2020's four working groups, managed key relationships with partners and donors and helped drive conversations to ensure that FP2020 is best positioned for success in meeting its goal to enable 120 million more women and girls to use contraceptives by 2020.[16][17][18][19][20]
