Detectors based on large numbers of fibres arranged in volumes, individually producing scintillation light at the passage of a charged particle. The fibres can be arranged in layers, and essentially act like arrangements of proportional tubes. The relatively modest light yield and cross-talk between adjacent fibres are problematic; also, the readout via photomultipliers is non-trivial. A possible readout via avalanche photodiodes has been discussed in Nonaka96. Resolutions of Hepb img570.gif -300  Hepb img204.gif or better have been reported; see Aschenauer97, Agoritsas95.
