Template:Plant taxa category

From HandWiki

The text below shows the result if this template is placed on the page Category:Asparagales genera.

This category should contain only articles about the genera of Asparagales, when the articles are at the scientific name, or redirects from the scientific name in the case of monotypic taxa or articles at the English name. The only subcategories should be those that contain such articles or redirects (e.g. "Category:subtaxon genera"). It should not contain any other categories.

For guidance on categorizing articles on plant genera by rank, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Categorization#Taxonomic rank categories.

Template documentation[view] [edit] [history] [purge]

This template adds a header and categories to categories containing articles about plant taxa at the rank of genus and above, ensuring consistency. It is designed to be placed on categories whose titles are of the form "Category:taxon ranks" where taxon = the taxon to which the members of the category belong, and ranks = genera, families, etc. Examples are Category:Orchidoideae genera and Category:Asparagales families.

Usage

  • In most cases, add {{Plant taxa category|parent=parentTaxon}} to the category page, where parentTaxon gives the next level above. For example, Category:Asparagaceae genera is placed in Category:Asparagales genera, so |parent=Asparagales is used.
  • The template uses the first word of the category title as the name of the taxon and of its main category. In a few cases (usually where the taxon name is English rather than Latin), this is incorrect; thus for Category:Orchid genera, the taxon's main category is Category:Orchids, not Category:Orchid. In these cases, |main= is needed. So for Category:Orchid genera, add {{Plant taxa category|main=orchids|parent=Asparagales}}. Lower case is used, so that in this case the descriptive text appears as "genera of orchids".
  • (As of November 2018), there are a very few exceptional cases where further explanatory text is useful or even necessary. In these cases |description= can be used to create a custom wikitext description of the taxon, e.g. |description=[[Arecaceae]] (palms), which used at Category:Arecaceae genera produces the description of the category "genera of Arecaceae (palms)".
  • The standard text produced by the template explains that there can be subcategories whose names are of the form "Category:subtaxon ranks". For example, Category:Asparagales genera has subcategories including Category:Asparagaceae genera. If there should be no subcategories (other than possibly one for the corresponding monotypic taxon ranks), specify |subcategories=no or |subcats=no.

All parameters

{{Plant taxa category
|parent = parent taxon ranks category (required)
|main = main category for the taxon (optional)
|description = custom wikitext to describe the taxon (optional, only exceptionally needed)
|subcategories = yes OR no (optional; the default is "yes", specify "no" to say that there should be no subcategories other than one for corresponding monotypic taxon ranks)
}}
