Kay Firth-Butterfield is a lawyer, professor, and author specializing in the intersection of artificial intelligence, international relations, and AI ethics. Since 2017, she has been the Head of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning at the World Economic Forum.[1][2] and a member of the Executive Committee at the World Economic Forum. She is one of the foremost experts in the world on the governance of AI. She is a Barrister, former Judge and Professor, technologist and entrepreneur who has an abiding interest in how humanity can equitably benefit from new technologies, especially AI. Kay is an Associate Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and Master of the Inner Temple, London. She co-founded the Responsible AI Institute and, in 2014, was the world’s first Chief AI Ethics officer and created the AIEthics twitter hashtag. She was part of the group which met at Asilomar to create the Asilomar AI Ethical Principles. Kay regularly speaks to international audiences addressing many aspects of the beneficial and challenging technical, economic and social changes arising from the use of AI. She has been consistently recognized as a leading woman in AI since 2018 and was featured in the New York Times as one of 10 Women Changing the Landscape of Leadership. She is also a Distinguished Professor at INSEAD and on the Advisory Board of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas

She was an adjunct professor of law at the University of Texas at Austin.[3]

Also she has authored many articles and given many speeches on the topics of AI, law, international relations, AI ethics and AI for business and government transformation

Education

Firth-Butterfield graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in law and social science from the University of Sussex. She attended St. Mary's University for her further studies, where she received a Master's degree in international relations and a Master of Laws.[4]

Career

Firth-Butterfield started her career as a barrister and part-time judge in the United Kingdom .[5] Over time, she began to research more topics about the future of law, including the impact of AI, and specialized more at the intersection of AI and policy.[6] More recently, she has served as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Texas at Austin, where she co-founded the AI-Austin initiative with the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law.[3][7] Firth-Butterfield is currently an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge and heads the AI and machine learning executive committee at the World Economic Forum.[8][9]

She has advised governments, think tanks, and nonprofits about artificial intelligence law, ethics, and policy. She established an AI ethics advisory panel at Lucid.ai in 2014, which has since included AI experts like Murray Shanahan, Max Tegmark, and Derek Jinks.[2][10] Since 2015, she has served as the Executive Committee Vice Chair of IEEE's Global Initiative on Ethical Considerations in the Design of AI and Autonomous Systems.[11][12] She has also served on Lord Chief Justice’s advisory panel on AI and law, the advisory board for UNESCO's International Research Centre on AI, and AI4ALL's advisory board.[13] She is on the Polaris Council for the Government Accountability Office (USA).

Firth-Butterfield has written two books, including Human Rights and Human Trafficking[14] and Laws on Human Trafficking,[15] the latter co-authored with Tina Miranda.
