Scott Murray is a data visualization expert, author, software developer, statistician, data journalist and code artist from Portland, Oregon . Murray specializes in data visualization in web development.

Murray is the author of the book Interactive Data Visualization for the Web, a guide for creating data visualization on the web using the JavaScript plotting library D3.js.[1][2] He is also a contributor to the Processing programming language.[3] He leads many workshops on data visualization, at conferences such as the Eyeo festival.[4]

Early life and education

Scott Murray graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in environmental theory from Vassar College in 2001[5] and received his Master of Fine Arts in 2010 from MassArt's Dynamic Media Institute.[6][7] Murray's master thesis was titled Dynamic Systems of Engagement [8]. After graduation, Scott Murray became an Assistant Professor of Design at the University of San Francisco teaching courses titled Introduction to Visual Communication for Static Media, Dynamic Media and Information Visualization and Interaction Design [9].

Books

Murray is primarily known for his book, Interactive Data Visualization, the first edition of which was first released by O'Reilly in November 2012.[10][11] The book is a guide for learning JavaScript and its plotting library D3.js as well as HTML, CSS and SVG, all of which are used for creating data visualizations and animations on web pages.

The second edition of Interactive Data Visualization for the Web was published in 2017. [12][13]

Murray is currently working on another book entitled "Creative Coding and Data Visualization with p5.js: Drawing on the Web with JavaScript."[14].
