Martin Keary (born 1982), better known as Tantacrul is an Irish YouTuber, composer and designer, who runs two popular open source music applications: Audacity and MuseScore. His YouTube channel features video essays that cover music, music philosophy and descriptions of his ongoing development of Audacity and MuseScore.

Career

Keary studied for an undergraduate degree at the Limerick School of Art and Design in 2005, later working as a designer for Supermassive Games, Canonical, and Microsoft. He completed a Masters degree (MMUS) at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, under Gordon McPherson, winning the Craig Armstrong prize for composition in 2016.[1][2]

In January 2018, he released a video about the band UK band Cardiacs and their lead singer Tim Smith. Later, when Tim Smith was nominated for an honorary doctorate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Keary was invited to the ceremony to discuss Tim's contributions to music. In an interview about the ceremony, Keary said: "My old composition professor, Gordon McPherson had been talking about nominating Tim for an honorary degree for quite a while and the fact that it happened in the same year that I published my Cardiacs video was great because it presented me with a unique opportunity to be involved." [3]

In November 2018, he released a YouTube video critiquing the design of Avid's Sibelius, an industry standard software package used by classical musicians. The video went viral, which, according to authors of the website scoringnotes.com "created something of a sensation in the notation community...".[4] After this, his channel began to grow in popularity, sparking a fresh interest in the art of software design in music applications.[5]

In March 2019, his design critique of the open source software, MuseScore, ultimately led to him being hired as their new product lead in November 2019.[6][7] In January 2020, as part of his work on MuseScore, Keary designed and released the open licence notation font, "Leland" named after Leland Smith, the creator the abandonware notation application, SCORE.[8][9][10]

In November 2020, Keary became the project lead and spokesperson for Audacity, a popular audio editing application that has been downloaded over 200 million times.[11][12][13][14][15] In November 2021, he announced a new release that included non-destructive editing for the first time.[16] In April 2022, he announced that Audacity was being released on the Microsoft Store (for free) to combat the numerous fake imitations that were charging users for inferior products.[17][18][19]

Tantacrul has also featured in videos alongside other popular YouTubers, including Adam Neely, David Bruce and Ben Levin (of the band Bent Knee)[20]
