Short description: Research and Development Firm

AVN Corporation (AVN) is a research and development firm with core competencies in chemicals, technical engineering, specialty and custom manufacturing, and advanced software technologies.[1] The company is headquartered in South Charleston, West Virginia, at the West Virginia Regional Technology Park,[2] and has approximately 100 employees.

History

The Mid-Atlantic Technology Research & Innovation Center (MATRIC)[3] was founded by Dr. George E. Keller[4] and other local leaders in 2003, as a non-profit dedicated to encouraging economic development.[3] It was established to avoid brain drain[5] after the Dow Chemical Company's decision to move its R&D activities out of West Virginia.[6] Laboratory operations began in 2005 in the former Dow Technical Center, and pilot plant operations followed suit in 2010. On February 1, 2013, Steven B. Hedrick became MATRIC's new President and Chief Executive Officer.[7] On December 7, 2022, AVN communicated its intention to acquire the operations of MATRIC, and a year later, AVN officially completed the acquisition of MATRIC[1] on January 1, 2023.

Awards and Success

Between 2008 and 2011, MATRIC staff were classified as investors on 89 patent applications: 65 of which were for customers and 24 for MATRIC developed technologies. As of 2023, AVN (formerly MATRIC) now has more than 130 United States patents and more than 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals[8], including Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology,[9] Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research,[10] and Catalysis Science and Technology.[11]

In March 2022, AVN became a sub-awardee[1] of the RACER grant from the Department of Commerce, enabling the establishment of a National Center of Excellence[12] for chemical process design. In 2023, AVN's Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Jack Dever, received the Lawrence B. Evans Award][13] in Chemical Engineering Practice from The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).[14]
