BCN3D Technologies, based in Barcelona, Spain, is a developer, designer and manufacturer of fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing technology. Its products include 3D printers, 3D printing software and filaments.

BCN3D is best known for its pioneering development of Independent Dual Extrusion (IDEX) technology,[1] which allows two printing heads to move independently, thus doubling production capacity.

The company’s products are used in more than 60 countries, including such sectors as healthcare,[2] engineering,[3][4] and education.[5]

History

BCN3D was founded in 2011 at CIM UPC, the technological center of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.[6] It grew out of the open-source project RepRap and was originally called RepRapBCN. Their first product was a replication of RepRap’s Prusa Mendel, an open-source 3D printer, which was sold as a kit.

In 2013, RepRapBCN released their first model, the BCN3D, which was also sold as a kit.

In 2014, the company released the BCN3D+, which allowed for the use of two extruders. Also in 2014, in collaboration with electronics engineer and RepRap pioneer Richard Horne (aka RichRap), the team produced their first delta 3D printer, the BCN3DR. It was smaller, lighter, and faster than its predecessors, and its simplified design made it easier to maintain.[7]

In 2015, RepRapBCN changed its name to BCN3D Technologies and released its landmark Sigma printer, the first to feature the innovative IDEX technology. It was designed for applications such as development and functional prototypes, and education/research.[8]

In 2017, BCN3D released the Sigmax, which featured a much larger build volume, as well as an improved extruder system and other advances.[9][10]

In 2019, after raising $3 million in seed funding, BCN3D Technologies spun off to become a standalone company.[11][12] It also reached the milestone of selling 5,000 printers and announced a partnership with BASF and Mitsubishi Chemical to create BCN3D filaments.

In October of that year, the company released its first Epsilon printer, the W50, which was designed for the production of large-scale parts made from industrial-grade materials.[13]

In 2020, the company secured a second round of funding from a combination of new and existing investors, including the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), the Mondragon Group, and the venture capitalist firms Accurafy4, JME Venture Capital, and Danobatgroup. The investment was used to develop new hardware features and new materials for the professional market.[14][15] At that time, BCN3D also moved to new, larger headquarters in Gavà, Barcelona.

To help combat the COVID-19 pandemic, BCN3D, along with such tech giants as HP, shared their expertise and resources with Spanish healthcare institutions. The company's contributions included the manufacture and distribution of thousands of reusable face shields for healthcare workers in Spain.[16][17]
