Bookmundi is an online travel booking platform founded in 2015 by Rasmus Juul-Olsen. The company is based in Denmark and partners with local tour operators around the world, currently in 135 countries. [1] The company is one of the largest online travel agencies (OTAs), offering multi-day and custom tours and then handling all transactions and payments, from which they charge a commission.[2]

History

In 2013, Juul-Olsen started the website nepaltrek.com to sell trekking tours; it later expanded to offer other types of tours and was rebranded in 2015 as Bookmundi.com.[3] In January 2016, Bookmundi launched the first “integrated real-time chat and customized holiday” feature on their website, allowing customers to chat with local travel specialists.[4][5] They also promoted offering "skip-the-line" tickets so customers wouldn't have to wait in line for popular tourist attractions.[6]

In July 2021, the company conducted a survey of over 1,000 tour companies across the world, looking to assess the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the travel industry.[7][8]

In January 2022, Bookmundi announced its pledge to carbon offset all tours offered on its website.[9] This initiative came with Juul-Olsen's prediction that "the post-pandemic travel era" would be "greener"[10] hoping to make travel greener and attract eco-concious customers.[11] Since February 2022, the company claims to now carbon offset all of their 15,000 tours as well as all indirect carbon emissions from servers and users browsing bookmundi.com.[12] The company invests in carbon offset projects around the world.[13] The founder, Juul-Olsen, was quoted as saying “considering that the travel industry accounts for a significant portion of CO2 emissions, it should, in fact, be neither possible nor lawful to sell a tour without it being carbon offset.”[14]

In February 2022, the company launched an initiative where customers and website visitors can donate to support Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[15]
