Imaginando is a Portuguese company founded in 2014 by Nuno Santos that develops software for music production, sound design and performance as well as audio reactive visuals. The company’s headquarters is located in Braga, Portugal.

History

Imaginando was founded by Nuno Santos in Braga, Portugal (City of Media Arts of UNESCO), who is the company's current CEO and CTO.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Nuno Santos has a degree in computer science and engineering by University of Minho. In 2008 he started working in DISPLAX, developing multi touch input drivers for Windows and Linux, as well as the control panel applications for Windows, macOS and Linux using Qt Framework.[7]

In his spare time Nuno was also a DJ and producer using tools like Traktor from Native Instruments and Ableton Live. As a musician and multi-touch technology engineer, combining these skills led him to start working on his own iOS app for controlling Ableton Live, LIVKONTROL.

LIVKONTROL was first released on iOS on 2012 and for Android one year later.[8][9]

Following his experience developing control surfaces for Ableton Live with LIVKONTROL, Teenage Engineering commissioned him to work on an OP-1 control surface for Ableton Live.[10]

In 2014 Imaginando was founded due to LIVKONTROL’s increasing traction with the ambition of creating a new range of products in the music technology domain. The company started as a business initiative with no venture funding.

Looking for a solution for maintaining a single code base for multiple target devices, the Qt Framework was adopted.[11] In this context TKFX - Traktor Dj Controller was developed as the first official product of Imaginando, released in 2014.[12]

The success of this development led to rewriting LIVKONTROL into LK which was released in 2015.[13]

In 2015 he joined forces with his long time friend Rui Antunes, an analog electronics expert and synthesizer repairer, to create Imaginando’s first synthesizer. During his studies, Rui had developed an analog modeled synthesizer in Pure Data, which served as a base for the development of DRC (Digital Resistor Capacitor).

During DRC development and stemming from a media arts open call from GNRATION.[14][15] Nuno and Rui applied to the call with a project called “Harpa Laser”. The project consisted in a 2 meter tall iron structure that incorporated 8 lasers in parallel and with a DRC engine running on a Raspberry Pi. This new media art installation debuted in the 2015 Noite Branca, in the streets of Braga.[16][17][18][19]

In 2016, Imaginando released DRC.[20][21]

In 2017, Imaginando ventured on another open call by GNRATION, this time turning a piece of antique furniture into a gigantic digital music box.[22]

In 2018, DLYM, a chorus and flanger effect, was released.[23]

In 2018, Imaginando was hired to develop ConnectionOpen, an application designed for uncompressed, low-latency, VOIP communications for voice over artists and recording studios, receiving the ‘Innovation Award’ by MusicTech.[24]

In 2019, K7D, a tape delay effect, was released.[25]

In 2020, Imaginando released FRMS, a granular synthesizer that combines granular, subtractive and FM synthesis.[26]

In 2021, Imaginando released VS, a visual synthesizer that can turn musical compositions into graphical effects (based on GLSL shaders, images and videos), in real time, by taking advantage of incoming audio and midi information.[27]

In 2023, Imaginando released BAM - Beat Maker & Music Maker, a groovebox style application that can also host plugins.[28][29]
