Northflix is a Nigerian media-services provider. It was founded in 2019 by Jamilu Abdussalam[1][2] in Kano State, Nigeria. Northflix emulates the video streaming service of Netflix. It allows online streaming of films and television programs. The platform is created for and by Hausa film industry Kannywood. It provides a direct-to-consumer approach in delivery of quality content to Hausa movie lovers worldwide. Northflix is intended to help the industry battle the long-standing issues of piracy, and depletion of revenues of the government and income returns to the movie producers.[3] At the same time, Northflix hopes to boost the popularity of Hausa movies in the global market.[4]
Industry challenges
The major challenges facing the Kannywood industry are poor distribution and piracy. The moment a film becomes popular, pirated copies appear. The pirated copies are converted into digital form and made easily accessible to viewers via their phones.[5][6] These problems reduce the revenues to the movie's producers.[7]
Membership fee
Northflix has a three-day subscription concept, where subscribers rent a movie for a flat-rate of ₦300 for three days only.[8] The subscription fee is paid via ATM card with naira or dollars, or via mobile transfer to a designated account.[9]
Ownership
Northflix shares are held by institutional investors, including Norrrenberger Financial Group[10] and Hot Lead Management Consult Limited.
