Prismic is a SaaS company that offers tools for content management and website building. Prismic is most often described as a headless CMS, though the company describes itself as a headless website builder.[1] Prismic is headquartered in Paris, France with an international remote team.

History

Prismic launched in 2013, observing the opportunity for an API-based content management system. In their first blog post when Prismic launched, founder Sadek Drobi wrote in Introducing prismic.io, https://prismic.io/blog/introducing-prismic.io, "CMSs are focusing on the wrong problem. They’re focusing on the front end. We had to create Prismic.io to bring the focus back to managing content. Writing, experimenting with, versioning, planning, collaborating, publishing content. And offering an API that removes traditional CMS constraints placed on developers."

Prismic achieved profitability in 2016 [2].

In 2021, Prismic announced a Series A funding round of $20 million USD with Aglaé Ventures and Eurazeo.[3].In an interview on BFM, Drobi said that Prismic's potential clients are "anyone who wants to be present on the web.” Drobi said developers can use Prismic to “build custom website sections — Slices — that anyone in the team can then assemble in a website builder to build the pages they need." [4]

Products

Prismic describes itself as a headless website builder[5], though it is more often called a headless CMS. Prismic offers content as a service; content is edited in the Prismic interface, stored on the Prismic servers, and delivered via the Prismic API. Prismic’s core feature set include custom content modeling, content scheduling and versioning, multilingual support, and “Slices,” which allows content editors to create dynamic layouts.[6]

Prismic comprises three main products that work together: a content editing interface, an API, and a website development tool called Slice Machine.

Prismic offers dynamic multi-session previews, which, Samuel Larsen-Disney writes, “allows you to share multiple simultaneous dynamic previews (with shareable links).”[7]

Reception

Some developers prefer an open source CMS to Prismic’s proprietary content as a service model. In Decoupled Drupal in Practice, Drupal expert Preson So argues that proprietary CMSs “such as Contentful and Prismic, although quickly gaining market share, are suboptimal for those who prefer to work with open source from end to end.” So acknowledges that both Contentful and Prismic “provide free and open source SDKs that work seamlessly with their own web services while enabling developers to write in their own language. Netherless, these SDKs, although free, require a subscription to a proprietary platform with often opaque API specifications.”[8]

In 2017’s The SEO Battlefield, Anne Ahola Ward describes Prismic as a “developer-centric” CMS, noting that Prismic’s updates are automatic and developers can use it with any templating language. “The marketplace is more open to what a developer might want to do, which makes this platform a rising star.”Ahola-Ward, Anne (22 March 2017). The 2021 Jamstack Survey reported that 12.31% of respondents had used Prismic and 53.79% were aware of Prismic. Out of all CMSs included in the survey, Prismic ranked 7th by usage and 4th by satisfaction. [9]

In a 2018 review, CMS Wire described Prismic as a "highly approachable headless CMS," praising the launch process, navigation, documentation, and built-in project management tools.[10]

In a 2021 roundup of headless CMSs, Smashing Magainze said that Prismic “is the old character in the headless CMS… but that hasn’t stopped them innovating in the space.” The review said that Prismic is the best headless CMS for “those looking to minimize friction for content editors.”[11]

Prismic has been criticized for its lack of write API.[12][13]. The company has defended this product decision and addressed the criticism by adding more specialized features, like third-party integrations[14].

Clients

Prismic has over 5,000 paying customers. Prismic clients include Google, Ikea, eBay, Netflix, Deliveroo, and Digital Ocean.[15][16]
