Smokeball is a technology company that develops law practice management software for the legal profession which includes legal billing, automatic time tracking, automated legal forms, and AI.[1][2][3][4][5]

The company is headquartered in Sydney, Australia and operates in the US and UK.[6]

The CEO Hunter Steele was inspired to create Smokeball because of his father's experience as a lawyer in Bathurst, Australia.[7][8]

Smokeball expanded to US in 2013 with an office in Chicago and the UK in 2023.[9][10][11]

In 2021, Smokeball raised AUD $30 million in its first capital raise and acquired legal tech startup FamilyProperty.[12][13]

In July 2024, Smokeball announced it's AI Matter Assistant named Archie.[14][15][16]

In 2025, it was announced that Smokeball's partnership with several bar associations, including D.C. Bar, New York State Bar Association, the California Lawyers Association, the Virginia State Bar, provided 500,000 lawyers with free access to trust accounting and billing software.[17][18]
