Summary

Description
DeepSeek-R1, Qwen2.5).
English: A line chart showing the gap in AI development between the United States and China from 2023 to early 2026, based on the Epoch Capabilities Index (ECI). Since 2023, frontier models have been exclusively developed in the US. Chinese models have trailed by an average of 7 months, with the gap ranging from 4 to 14 months. This delay mirrors the difference between proprietary (closed) models, which dominate the US frontier (e.g., GPT-5, Gemini 3 Pro), and open-weight models, which comprise the majority of leading Chinese releases (e.g., DeepSeek-R1, Qwen2.5).
