English: Cross section diagram of the outside end of the Apollo Lunar Module's Alinement Optical Telescope (AOT). The AOT allowed astronauts to measure the apparent position of a star relative to the guidance system's stable member.
The AOT was essentially a periscope with no magnification. It had a 60 degree field of view and the outer prism could be rotated to any one of six positions. A conical sun shield was added later to prevent scattered light impinging on the prism from washing out stars astronauts were trying to measure.
