Summary

Description
English: A newsreel from Thai Television Company Limited, or Channel 4, documented the signing ceremony of the ASEAN Declaration during the government of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn. The event, initiated by Colonel Dr. Thanat Khoman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and four other member nations (The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) on August 8, 1967, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saranrom Palace. This newsreel is considered an important historical event in Thai diplomacy and international politics, marking the beginning of tangible cooperation in Southeast Asia after the Association of Southeast Asia (ASA), founded in 1961, was dissolved due to political conflicts between Indonesia and Malaysia. Furthermore, the film chronicles Dr. Thanat Khoman's significant achievements as a benefactor of Thailand and Southeast Asia. During that time, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries were engulfed in the Cold War, experiencing political instability from threats from communism, and experiencing economic stagnation. Furthermore, the United States, which supported Thailand at that time, was facing the Vietnam War. Reaching mutual benefits with the United States was fragile and uncertain. Thailand did not believe it could rely on a superpower like the United States indefinitely, so finding self-reliance was essential. Dr. Thanat Khoman's initiative to establish the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was a crucial step, enabling Thailand and the region to stand on its own two feet politically, economically, socially, and culturally, without relying on superpowers. Although Dr. Thanat Khoman faced diplomatic obstacles, as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore were embroiled in intense territorial disputes at the time, he used his diplomatic skills to foster friendship and establish Thailand as the home of the ASEAN community, ultimately through the signing ceremony establishing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
A key part of the film is the recording of the minutes of the signing ceremony of the Bangkok Declaration or ASEAN Declaration on 8 August 1967. Dr. Thanat Khoman, along with Mr. Narciso Ramos, Foreign Minister of the Philippines, Mr. Adam Malik, Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Mr. Abdul Razak Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of National Development of Malaysia, and Mr. S. Rajaratnam, Foreign Minister of Singapore, arrived at the signing hall and sat at the tables prepared for the signing of the Declaration. Following this, each country delivered a statement on its establishment amidst a large number of international media waiting to cover the news.
Since the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 1967, ASEAN has achieved success in many aspects of its goals and intentions as stated in the Declaration. Furthermore, it has made progress in various fields, with 10 ASEAN member countries joining the group (currently, only Timor-Leste is missing). This newsreel is a valuable historical evidence and memory for both Thailand and the Southeast Asian region, as it allows us to witness the origins of the living cooperation of the people of the region, as well as recognize the contributions and vision of Dr. Thanat Khoman, a prominent Thai Foreign Minister.
