Summary

Description
English: The Easter Fire, also called the Paschal Fire, is a powerful Christian and cultural tradition celebrated on Holy Saturday night as part of the Easter Vigil. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, the resurrection of Jesus, and the renewal of life. In many places, it is marked by large bonfires, candle rituals, and community gatherings.

From this fire, the Paschal (Easter) candle is lit, representing Christ as the “Light of the World.” The congregation then enters the dark church, chanting Lumen Christi (“Light of Christ”), symbolizing the resurrection bringing light into darkness. The fire marks the transition from mourning Jesus’ death on Good Friday to celebrating His resurrection on Easter Sunday.

The Easter Fire emphasizes hope, renewal, and the victory of life over death and it remains one of the most visually striking Easter traditions, combining ancient customs with Christian liturgy. In Cameroon, bonfires are common and churches often hold Easter Vigil services with candle-lighting rituals, symbolizing the same triumph of light and resurrection.

In short, the Easter Fire is celebrated to mark the resurrection of Jesus and the victory of light over darkness, blending Christian liturgy with cultural traditions of renewal.
