Summary

Description
English: A report of the burning of La France, a vessel powered by boiling the highly inflammable liquid ether. The technical concept was to use the waste heat of a steam engine to obtain extra power by driving an ether engine. Apart from its danger the idea was thermodynamically unsound in the tropics for lack of a cold sink. A number of these combined steam and ether (or chloroform) ships were built.
