Medicine:Deaf Equipment Acquisition Fund

From HandWiki

The Deaf Equipment Acquisition Fund or DEAF is a trust fund designed to pay the cost of specialized telecommunications equipment for the deaf or hearing impaired and to pay the cost of operating and deploying a dual-party relay system.

The fund is fed by either state or FCC-mandated surcharges on telephone bills. The surcharges may appear as "Relay Service and Communications Devices Fund" or "CRS" or other notations. Administration of the fund is governed by committees, including representatives from consumer groups and telephone utilities.

An example of the use of the DEAF trust is the free or discounted distribution of TDDs.
