The Center for Intellectual Property Understanding (CIPU) is an independent non-profit in the United States that supports broad awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights (patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets). CIPU provides an educational framework that serves to clarify the purpose and impact of intellectual property rights, promote freedom of ideas, and deter illegal use.

CIPU holds events, such as the annual IP Awareness Summit (IPAS 2021), publishes research reports[1][2] [3] and engages in strategic partnerships with organizations, educators and IP owners. IP Awareness Summits have been held with UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and Columbia Technology Ventures, as well as the Chicago-Kent College of Law and Illinois Institute of Technology.

History

Judge Paul Michel, Chief Judge for the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (ret) was instrumental in establishing CIPU in 2016, as was James Pooley, ex-Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization and Marshall Phelps, former Vice President of Intellectual Property for Microsoft and IBM and an inductee to the IAM IP Hall of Fame in 2006.[4] Author and Managing Director of Brody Berman Associates, Bruce Berman, is co-founder and chairman.
