The Cyber Crime Investigation Division, more commonly known as the Cyber Crime Unit,[1][2][3][4] is a branch of Bangladesh Police which is operated under the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.[5][6][7] The main function of this division is to patrol, prevent, detect and investigate cyber-terrorism and cyber-crime in Dhaka Metropolitan.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

History

This division commenced its operation on 3 May 2016.[14][15][16] Amidst the rise of cyber crimes and cyber bullying in Bangladesh,[17][18][19][20] the policy makers took initiative to launch this dedicated Cyber Crime Division for Dhaka Metropolitan that will address digital crimes including online harassment, hacking, Financial Fraud Crime and many more.[21][22] The agency has re-named their name "Cyber Crime Investigation Division" on July 10, 2020[23]

Protecting the netizens of Dhaka Metropolitan by preventing cyber crime.

Mission

Organization

Headquartered in 36 Minto Road, Ramna, Dhaka,[24] the division works under one Deputy Commissioner.[25][26] He is assisted by two Additional Deputy Commissioners. They supervise four teams, namely:

  1. Social Media Monitoring Team;
  2. Website & E-mail Crime Team;
  3. Digital Forencsic Team and
  4. Mobile Finance Service.

Each of these teams are led by one Assistant Commissioner. The total strength sanctioned for this division is very limited and is only 100.

Services

The Cyber Division services by its Help Desk, over hotline number, e-mail, Hello CT apps and different social media platforms.[27][28][29][30][31]

Help desk

The Help Desk of Cyber Division is a unique innovation for instantly helping the cyber victims of Dhaka Metropolitan.[32][33][34] Each month on an average it serves more than 250 victims.

Forencsics Lab

Cyber Security & Crime Division has a state of art forensics lab which only provides forensics opinion for internal cases.

Awards

In 2017 one of the ADC Md Najmul Islam was awarded with Bangladesh Police Medal (service).[35]

On 12 December 2018 this Division was awarded with Digital Bangladesh Award 2018.[36]

On Police Week 2019 DC Md Alimuzzaman was awarded with Bangladesh Police Medal (service) and ADC A F M Al Kibria, AC Sayed Nasirullah & Ishtiaque Ahmed were awarded with President Police Medal (service).[37]

On Police Week 2020 SP Mishuk Chakma, AC Dhruba Joetirmoya Gope and Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam was awarded with Bangladesh Police Medal (service).[38]
