Equinox is a racial justice initiative[1] launched in March 2021 with the support of the European Commissioner Helena Dalli.[2] Equinox was co-founded by Alfiaz Vaiya.[3]
In March 2021 Equinox put forward a blueprint for reforms recommended to fight structural racism at the EU level.[4]
Equinox has voiced concerns about other areas of EU policy, such as the European Green Deal, accused by the organization of excluding racialised people.[5]
Concerns about the role of the institutions of the European Union
Along with the European Network Against Racism, Equinox has been denouncing the whiteness of the European institutions and argued for a greater representation of racialised communities in the policy discussions at the EU level.[6]
Representatives of Equinox consider that the EU contributed to exacerbate racial inequalities through inaction in respect of police violence towards racialised minorities in European countries and through the failure of Brussels to support civil society organizations combating racism.[7]
European Anti-Racism Summit
Equinox was one of the civil society organizations represented at the first European Anti-Racism Summit which took place 19 March 2021[8] co-hosted by the European Commission and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Equinox together with European Network Against Racism have caused a controversy reproaching to the European Commission an insufficient engagement with the civil society representing racialised communities ahead of the summit.[9]
