Pharma 20 (P20) is a global initiative focused on promoting cooperation and collaboration in the pharmaceutical sector. It serves as a platform for sharing best practices, addressing common challenges, and fostering innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. [1] [2]
Background
Pharma 20 was established to recognize the critical role of the pharmaceutical sector in addressing global health challenges, improving access to medicines, and driving innovation. The initiative aims to enhance international collaboration among countries to address common issues and ensure the availability of safe, effective, and affordable medicines for all. [3]
The G20 is composed of most of the world's largest economies' finance ministries, including both industrialised and developing nations; it accounts for around 80% of gross world product (GWP),[4] 75% of international trade, two-thirds of the global population,[5] and 60% of the world's land area.
Objectives
The main objectives of Pharma 20 include:
Collaborative research and development: The initiative encourages collaborative research and development efforts among G20 countries to accelerate the discovery and development of new drugs, treatments, and therapies. This includes fostering partnerships between pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and regulatory bodies. [6]
Regulatory harmonization: Pharma 20 seeks to promote regulatory harmonization and convergence among G20 nations to streamline the drug approval process, enhance patient safety, and facilitate the timely access to quality medicines across borders. Affordable and accessible medicines: The initiative aims to explore strategies to improve the affordability and accessibility of essential medicines, particularly in low-income countries, while ensuring sustainable and ethical practices in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharma 20 undertakes various activities to achieve its objectives. These include:
Global Pharma Summits: The initiative organizes the Global Pharma Summits, bringing together stakeholders from the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory authorities, academia, and civil society. These summits serve as platforms for discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaboration on key issues impacting the pharmaceutical sector. Policy dialogues: Pharma 20 facilitates policy dialogues among member countries to discuss challenges, exchange best practices, and develop strategies to address issues such as research and development, intellectual property rights, pricing, and access to medicines. Capacity building: The initiative supports capacity building efforts, including training programs, workshops, and technical assistance, to strengthen regulatory frameworks, promote innovation, and improve healthcare delivery in the pharmaceutical sector. Global Pharma Summit 2023 Series
The Global Pharma Summit 2023 Series, organized by Pharma 20, was unveiled by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India. The series will be held in major G20 cities, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss and develop solutions for global health challenges, innovation in the pharmaceutical sector, and equitable access to medicines. Pharma 20 comprises member countries of the G20. The initiative encourages the active participation of pharmaceutical industry stakeholders, regulatory authorities, research institutions, and other relevant organizations to promote collaboration and cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector.
